The RX NASCAR Brief – June 20
NASCAR Raceday – Montoya looks to repeat at Infineon
This week's stop on the Sprint Cup Series is the Toyota SaveMart 350, held at Infineon Raceway, one of two road courses on the schedule of NASCAR's biggest series. Juan Pablo Montoya is the defending champion at this event, earning his first Cup-level victory on June 24th, 2007.
Two former multi-Cup champions lead the list of favorites at four-time titlist Jeff Gordon and two-time champion Tony Stewart are rated at 400 to take the checkered flag. These two are considered the two best road races in NASCAR, and they have combined to win eight races at Infineon since 1998. Gordon's finishing average of 9.6 is third among active drivers, while Stewart is fifth at 10.0. Neither of these future Hall-of-Famers has won a race this season, so this would be the perfect place for them to get going.
Montoya is next at 800, but the No.42 heads into this race slumping miserably with three finishes of 30th or lower in three of his last four starts, including two straight 38th-place finishes. However, Montoya's Formula One career gives him an advantage over most other drivers.
Kevin Harvick is tied at 800 with Montoya, which is a bit coincedental as the two have been icy towards each other since they crashed at Watkins Glen last season. Harvick has a 15.1 finishing average in seven races at Infineon, and he won the Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal last year, which is also a road course.
Robby Gordon is a solid darkhorse at 1000, as he has won at Infineon once before, back in 2003. Gordon is an accomplished road-course racer, and he has a decent finishing average of 16.1 in eight Infineon races.
